Dear Families,

Each year, we work to make sure every student in our school receives the support they need to achieve success and experience positive outcomes. To do this successfully, we have ongoing screening in both academic and social, emotional, and behavioral functioning so we can identify students who need additional support.  Over the next few weeks, we will do the following screeners to assist us in knowing what supports are needed in our schools, either at the building, class, or individual level.

Students in grades 3-5 will complete the Youth Needs Screener. This self-report form has 16 questions to highlight student strengths as well as identify internalization indicators, such as signs of worry or sadness.  If you would like to preview the screener, you may contact your school counselor.

Teachers will also be completing the SAEBRS (Social, Academic, & Emotional Behavior Risk Screener). This tool gives teachers the opportunity to reflect on the strengths and needs of their students (K-5) and allows us to tailor support to each individual student.

Additionally, in support of our students' social and emotional learning, we work with our staff to analyze and use the information we gather from each fall and spring administration of Panorama.  The Panorama survey helps us assess students’ perceptions of their own social emotional learning; we believe these are critical skills and mindsets that support successful children.  The first Panorama online survey for the year will be administered during one of your child’s School Counseling lessons in the coming weeks.  It is our hope that all students across our district in 4th-12th grades will participate. This questionnaire encourages students to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning; survey focus areas are grit, self-management, sense of belonging, social awareness, and school climate.

If you decide that you would like to have your child not participate in the Youth Needs Screener or Panorama, please email your school counselor by September 18.

Birthday Book Club Celebrations Begin This Week!

Our Maryland Birthday Book Club is a beloved school tradition where students get to vote on a book to add to the school library. Just like last year, we will have celebrations during students’ lunch/recess hour. Our first celebration for August, September, & October Birthdays will occur on Friday, 9/18.

Students are voting for their choice of book in their classrooms this week. On Friday, 9/19, they will stop by the main lobby on their way to recess to sign the winning book, get their picture taken, and receive some special prizes. Our Birthday Book Club Committee members will facilitate the celebrations, but if your child is celebrating a birthday and you would like to help out, please email skylarblannin@gmail.com for details.

Book Club

The next Middle Grade Book Club is this Thursday at the Bexley Public Library from 4:30-5:30 (please note that the location has moved from the auditorium into the old Tech Center space in the downstairs area)! In two smaller groups, we will discuss our first read The Second Life of Snap by Erin Entrada Kelly which is a dystopian adventure tale of one resourceful girl and a robot worth rooting for! Then we will team up for some robot creations of our own and share November's book Spindelwood by Freddie Kolsch. Register HERE if you are able to attend Thursday. See you at the library!
